DIY pt. 1 – An avocado tree in China?

2009 October 9

Well, first of all – I have no idea how long my husband, the soon-to-come baby and myself are going to stay in Beijing. Sometimes I absolutely hate it and just wanna go home, and other times – like today – I feel like planning my whole future here. And what better then, than to start on a project that takes several years? I am gonna (try to) grow an avocado tree!

It started out to be an amazing day. The sun was kind of shining behind the massive layers of Beijing smog, my new ayi (maid) was coming to set the house straight, and I had finally gotten one of those fancy water dispensers with heating/cooling device – so that water can be dispensed hot – or cold. Life was perfect.

Until my husband woke up. It turns out he is sick. Great. Now I am not at all stressing out about it being swine flu, just the mere fact that he is a man, and he is sick is by far enough. Because I knew immediately that this would change my status the forecoming week from wife to nurse/mum/maid.

Bring me tea! I have a headache! I want crackers! Do we have any movies I haven’t seen? Oooh, I don’t feel to good…

And so on, and so on, so I figured, I’d just nip this one in the bud – with the ultimate flu fighter – the garlic/chicken soup! It is really simple, quite yummy and a definite flu fighter. Miraculously it is also quite tasty, so feel free to try it, even if you’re not feeling under the weather!

Enough for 4 people

  • 10 whole garlics
  • 500 gr boneless chicken
  • 2 liters of chicken stock
  • flour
  • olive oil
  • thyme
  • pepper

Ok, so this is the 157Th time I’ve tried to register a blog from China. But as we all know, the great firewall of China is not that into blogs, so my old one for instance – even I can’t access it anymore. And then, this glorious, foggy Beijing morning, I try once more, completely randomly while waiting for my tea to cool down – and what do you know? I actually managed to register a blog!

I have to say I’m not crazy about the advertisement on this blog service, but I guess beggars can’t really be choosers…

This blog will be mainly about my passion for food, but in blog life as in real life – you never know what you’re gonna get at the end of the day. That’s what makes it fun!
